Former U.S. Senator Evan Bayh will deliver the inaugural address for a lecture series established at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in honor of his father, the former U.S. Senator Birch Bayh.
The inaugural Birch Bayh Lecture takes place at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Wynne Courtroom of the law school building, Inlow Hall, located at 530 W. New York St. on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. Registration is available online.
The lecture, “A Conversation with Evan Bayh,” is the first of an annual event the law school will host in honor of Birch Bayh. The lecture series will focus on issues of importance to the elder Bayh who served three terms as a member of the U.S. Senate. The series is being sponsored by generous contributions from friends of Birch Bayh, and from the Simon Property Group where Birch Bayh served on the board for 17 years.
Birch Bayh is a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Venable LLP, and is a senior fellow of the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.
During his three terms in office, Senator Birch Bayh authored historic legislation affecting the American presidency as well as the individual rights of women, minorities and youth. The senator wrote the landmark legislation, Title IX to the Higher Education Act, that prohibits discrimination based on gender. He is also the author and co-sponsor of the Bayh-Dole Act that enables universities and small businesses to gain ownership of federally-funded copyrights. The Act was deemed by The Economist to be “possibly the most inspired piece of legislation to be enacted in America over the past half century.”
As a U.S. Senator, Evan Bayh worked on key issues such as financial services reform and health care. Prior to representing Indiana in Washington, D.C., Bayh was the 45th governor of Indiana, and served two terms in that position. Evan Bayh is a partner at McGuireWoods in Washington, D.C., where he serves as a strategic advisor to those whose business goals are impacted by the actions of Congress, the executive branch, or by governors and legislators across the country.
