The second annual ‘Tour de Coops” -- a self-guided tour of local, urban chicken coops -- takes place from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, throughout the Broad Ripple, Meridian-Kessler, Rocky Ripple and Butler-Tarkington areas of Indianapolis. The open-house event, open to the public, features a dozen "show coops” and a couple of local schoolyard coops on display.
Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis continuing studies instructor Andrew Brake last year initiated the first tour of homes for feathered ones as a ‘field trip’ for students taking the IUPUI class “How to Raise Backyard Chickens.” The 2011 tour, open to the public, attracted 600 viewers.
Taught by Brake, this fall’s class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 20 and 27, at the IUPUI Park 100 Learning Center, 5980 W. 71st St. Students registered for the class are encouraged to attend Sunday’s tour.
Check-in and registration for the Tour de Coops take place at the tour’s first location, 440 E. 57th St., Indianapolis. The tour map provided at registration serves as the ticket for each coop location.
Pre-sale tickets online are $8 per person. On the day of the event, tickets are $10 per person.
