Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis has enrolled a record 1,602 international students, up 10 percent from last year. Nearly two-thirds of the international students are from China, India or Saudi Arabia.

The rise in international enrollment follows a 6 percent increase a year ago. International students now comprise 5.5 percent of the total IUPUI enrollment.

“International students choose IUPUI for the exceptional opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research with world-class faculty, internships in the Indianapolis business and nonprofit sectors, and a diverse campus community that welcomes their engagement,” said Sara Allaei, assistant dean and director for international enrollment and services. “As important members of the IUPUI community, international students give character to the campus and help IUPUI students develop a global perspective.”

The 10 countries sending the most students are China, 382; India, 345; Saudi Arabia, 281; South Korea,78; Taiwan, 40; Iran, 36; Canada, 34; Japan, 31; Mexico, 23; and Nigeria,19.

The increase at IUPUI follows a nationwide trend at large research universities that already have a significant international population, Allaei said. “International students are happy when urban and academic rankings coincide, as they do at IUPUI.”

International students at IUPUI cluster in engineering, business and the science programs, according to Allaei.

“These students are attracted by the prestige of a U.S. degree and to programs that are not accessible at home, either because it is not available or there are more students seeking placements than the programs have the capacity to serve,” she said.
