The director of the Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy, part of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, will serve on the board of directors for the National Space Society, the school has announced.

The National Space Society, a large U.S.-based grass-roots space advocacy group, has elected Peter Schubert as the Region 6 director on the society’s board. Region 6 includes National Space Society chapters in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The National Space Society Board of Directors is responsible for the overall supervision, control, direction and governance of the society. Board members are elected either at-large or for one of eight regional positions. Regional directors serve two-year voluntary terms.

The National Space Society sponsors the annual International Space Development Conference, now in its 32nd year. Schubert has presented papers at six of the last seven international conferences, and during the 2012 conference he ran a technical track called Space and the Environment.

Schubert joined the National Space Society in 2003. In 2004, the space advocacy group selected Schubert as the national director of its grass-roots lobbying effort.
