I have always admired social workers for their service to others and the strength of character it takes to be effective in that service. From its very beginning in 1911, Indiana University’s academic program in social work has been one of the most visible manifestations of a public university's mission of service to our city, state, nation, and world. This month, the IU School of Social Work and its alumni culminate its celebration of 100 years of service with activities in Bloomington and Indianapolis.

On Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, activities will open with a three-hour Continuing Education Conference at the IUPUI Campus Center, where faculty from our social work and labor studies programs will discuss the past, present, and future of the school. This will be followed by a tour of the school and campus for alumni and other conference attendees. In the evening, everyone will gather at the University Place Hotel Scholar’s Hall for a reception and dinner.

The guest speaker will be James Morris, the former executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, the largest humanitarian organization in the world. Jim, who is now president of Pacers Sports and Entertainment, began his life in public service in 1967, when he served as the chief of staff for Richard Lugar while he was mayor of Indianapolis. He was thus “present at the creation” of IUPUI in 1969 and served as a member of the IUPUI Board of Advisors for well over a decade.

Social workers are committed to the highest purposes: to help people in distress, to help them repair broken hopes and lives, to give relief to those less fortunate. Social workers bring keen minds and caring hearts to the problems and the solutions that are important to all of us and the quality of life we aspire to have in our communities. Let’s celebrate our School of Social Work’s faculty, staff, students, and alumni with a collective “thank you” as they congregate on our campus on Oct. 24.
