The IUPUI racers who took the first and second place trophies in the 2010 Purdue Grand Prix have earned the second and third starting positions at this year's “Greatest Spectacle in College Racing.”
The 54rd annual Grand Prix will take place at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 16, 2011, at the track built behind the Schwartz Tennis Center off McCormick Road and Cherry Lane in West Lafayette.
At the wheel of his #4 kart, IUPUI student and 2010 Purdue Grand Prix champion Justin Penix qualified in the second position for this year’s race. Penix was on the pole for both the 2009 and 2010 races.
IUPUI racer Blake Diester, last year's Grand Prix runner-up, qualified in the third position in his #57 Kart.
Penix will drive the first IUPUI Motorsports Club entry, while Diester is again running an independently entered kart.
Eric Grinder and his #35 kart, the second IUPUI Motorsports Club racer, will compete for a spot in Saturday's main event during a consolation race for non-qualifiers.
