Welcome to the first Monday of spring semester classes! We also offer a warm welcome to Tomas Lipinski, who joins the School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS) faculty as executive associate dean of SLIS at IUPUI as of January 1.

Previously professor and director of the Master of Library and Information Science program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Tom holds a doctoral degree from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a J.D. from Marquette University Law School. His research focuses on intellectual property issues, including digital archiving, distance education, cultural rights, and privacy. His forthcoming book from Neal-Schuman is The Librarian’s Legal Companion for Buying and Licensing Information Resources. Tom has also held positions as librarian at the Milwaukee Public Library and the H. Douglas Barclay Law Library at Syracuse University. His experiences and interest in intellectual property issues are an excellent fit not only for our SLIS program but for other areas of campus research as well.

My thanks to Marilyn Irwin for her leadership as the executive associate dean. She now returns to her full-time faculty role.

SLIS at IUPUI offers the Master of Library Science degree and joint degree programs with law, philanthropic studies, health informatics, and history—as well as other specializations and certifications, including graduate courses through distance education. SLIS enrolls some 300 students a year at IUPUI.
