IUPUI and the United States Auto Club recently announced a cooperative agreement that will involve IUPUI students in the management and promotion of nine 2011 USAC Midget Series events at the Speedrome in Indianapolis.
The agreement calls for students from the Motorsports Engineering Program in the School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI to have numerous opportunities to work alongside USAC officials and staff in eight races in the USAC Regional Midget Series that debuts May 25, 2011, at the Speedrome and a July 29, 2011 race which is part of the USAC National Midget Series.
While details of specific student activities under the agreement are under development, it is anticipated that IUPUI students will work in areas such as journalism/public relations, marketing/promotions, graphic design and media, in addition to performing technical inspection and timing and scoring duties on race days.
Motorsports engineering students who participate in the Midget events will enroll either for internship credits or directed study courses at IUPUI.
The cooperative agreement will “provide opportunities for our students to see motorsports from the inside in partnership with a longstanding racing body,” says IUPUI Professor and Motorsports Director Pete Hylton. “We get to see how a series is run and our ideas and energy in helping to market and promote the series should bring more people into the stands.”
Hylton said the USAC-IUPUI agreement could be the first ever to involve students from one university in the management and promotion of a complete racing series.
James M. Spink, USAC Executive Director of Developmental Series and Jason Smith, Senior VP of Race Operations, will be the USAC contacts for this series and will work closely with the university in developing the unique experiential learning partnership.
