One IUPUI student’s photos of the new Indianapolis International Airport and another student's photo of the site plan for a multi-million-dollar neuroscience complex were winners of an annual competition featuring the work of Herron School of Art and Design photography students.
On Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, the Borshoff agency, in partnership with The Frank and Katrina Basile Center for Art, Design and Public Life at Herron School of Art and Design, hosted the third annual Borshoff Annual Gallery Show + Awards.
Each year, as part of Borshoff's efforts to give young artists an opportunity to create and exhibit their work, the creative communications agency invites Herron students to respond to a creative theme and display their work at an in-house gallery show. Eleven Herron students participated in this year’s Borshoff competition. The 2010 theme, “Light Construction,” challenged students to capture the tremendous growth Indianapolis has experienced over the past decade. Their charge was to create a photographic work of art using light-directing, hand-crafted pinhole cameras.
Borshoff staff selected “Welcome to Indianapolis” by Herron student Anthony Deak as “Best of Show” during this year’s competition. As the winning artist, Deak received a $1,000 prize for his photo collage of the Indianapolis airport. Borshoff added the prize-winner to its growing collection of original artwork by emerging Indiana artists.
New for the 2010 competition, Borshoff added a “People’s Choice” award with the winner selected by guests attending the evening gallery showing. “Neuro Blue Plan” by student Courtney Hacker was selected the winner by the 100 guests. Hacker’s winning work features the image that starts the dialogue informing the public about the developmental blueprint for a $192 million, five-building neuroscience complex.
“This is the third year for the Borshoff Annual Gallery Show + Awards, and we’re always inspired by the level of passion and talent that Herron students display,” said Erik Johnson, partner at Borshoff. “The show is a great way to celebrate creativity and our mission as a strategic, creative communications agency.”
