INDIANAPOLIS - An orthodontist, a lawyer and a social worker are this year’s recipients of the prestigious Maynard K. Hine Medallions for their efforts on behalf of IUPUI, its students, schools, programs and alumni.

Dr. Kenneth R. Hyde of Valparaiso (IU School of Dentistry), Jimmie L. McMillian Jr. of Indianapolis (IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law) and Linda Olvey of Indianapolis (IU School of Social Work) increased the number of Hine Award recipients to 76 during the 40-year history of the awards program. The three accepted the Hine Medallions during the annual Alumni Leadership Dinner at the Woodstock Club on Feb. 28. The Office of Alumni Relations at IUPUI oversees the event.

Hyde received a doctor of dental surgery degree from the IU School of Dentistry in 1975, and added a master’s degree in orthodontics in 1979. For more than 30 years, he has been an integral part of the Valparaiso community and a long-standing supporter of the dental school, including more than a quarter-century as a member of the school’s alumni association board.

Accepting a part-time appointment in the dental school’s Department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Development as a volunteer clinical assistant professor in 2008, Dr. Hyde makes the round-trip between Valparaiso and Indianapolis on a monthly basis to share his expertise in his specialty with students. Hyde is president of the IU Orthodontic Alumni Association and a past president of the IU School of Dentistry Alumni Association and the Indiana Association of Orthodontists.

McMillian earned his law degree from the law school in 2002 and is a partner in the Indianapolis firm of Barnes & Thornburg. He is actively involved in events and programs that connect current students with potential mentors in the community. He also is the president of the IU Neal-Marshall Alumni Association’s Indianapolis chapter, and a past president of the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law Alumni Association.

Olvey earned a master’s degree in social work in 1983 and is the director field coordinator for the School of Social Work’s online master’s of social work program. She has been a member of the school’s alumni board since 1998, and previously was Social Work’s student services coordinator. Olvey left that post in to become a social worker at the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. She has been the school’s representative to the Alumni Association Executive Council, and has been an alumni field instructor for nearly a decade.
