Gibau Named Liberal Arts Associate Dean of Student Affairs

Gina Sanchez Gibau, Ph.D., associate professor of anthropology, has been named associate dean of student affairs in the School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis by Dean William Blomquist. The appointment will take effect Dec. 1, 2011.

A member of the IUPUI faculty since 2000, Professor Gibau is also an adjunct associate professor of Africana studies and a senior faculty member of the University College. The lead advisor for the Department of Anthropology from 2003 to date, she also served as acting chair from July to December 2010.

Professor Gibau anchors her research, service and teaching around the tenets of diversity and was recognized by the IUPUI Black Student Union with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Advocate of the Dream” Award (2008) and, was an individual and group member recipient of the Dr. Joseph T. Taylor Award for Excellence in Diversity (2003; 2010). Her recent research focuses on less represented minority graduate students in the sciences, and on multicultural teaching practices in higher education. She is the recipient of multiple campus grants to further her pedagogy and scholarly research. An active campus citizen, Professor Gibau is a member of the Liberal Arts Faculty Assembly, the IUPUI Faculty Council, the University College Curriculum Committee, the Black Faculty and Staff Council, and the Latino Faculty and Staff Council.

"Professor Gibau takes the helm of our student affairs office at an exciting time in the school’s history and in the development of IUPUI," said Dean Blomquist. "As we pursue continued progress in student development, and in combining breadth of access to higher education with rising expectations of excellence in academic achievement, we are looking forward to having the benefit of her leadership of our student affairs team working with faculty, staff and students throughout the school."

Professor Gibau assumes the role following the appointment of prior Associate Dean Richard E. Ward as the director of the IUPUI Center for Research and Learning. Amy Jones Richardson will continue to serve as acting associate dean until December.
