Diversity is the hallmark of the more than 4,500 new students who begin classes today (August 22, 2011) at IUPUI. Slightly more than one out of every four of these students is non-white.

This beginning group of students also has 8.5 percent more students who scored 1300 or higher on the critical reading and math portions of the SAT than the beginning group of students who started a year ago.

For official reporting, the IUPUI enrollment figure includes about 4,200 new students attending classes on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus and 300 new students on the Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus campus.

About 95 percent of the 2,700 students entering the freshman class on the IUPUI campus for the fall 2011 semester have come straight from high school, bringing an average high school GPA of 3.27.

While they are not new to college, the number of students attending IUPUI for the first time after transferring from other institutions has jumped to more than 1,500 students, an 11 percent increase compared to 2010 and a 26 percent increase compared to 2009. Some 850 of the transfers, or 57 percent, are from community colleges, and more than half of these students are from Ivy Tech Indianapolis.

IUPUI embraces diversity as essential for effective participation in a global community.

Twenty-six percent of the freshman students are non-white, showing growth in the number of minority students, including African-Americans. The number of Hispanic or Latino freshmen jumped 61 percent, compared to 2010.

Forty-four percent of the beginning students are the first in their families to attend college, up two percent from 2010. Some 16 percent of the students identify themselves as 21st Century Scholars, also an increase of 2 percentage points from a year ago.

Growth in diversity among IUPUI students overall includes a strong increase in new international student enrollment. IUPUI expects a 25 to 30 percent increase in new international undergraduate and graduate students this year, compared to a year ago.

Total estimated IUPUI enrollment for fall semester 2011 is 30,300.
