Improving the college graduation rate among Hoosiers has been called one of Indiana’s biggest challenges in terms of the future of jobs in the state.

According to American Community Survey estimates, more than 200,000 residents over age 25 in Marion and adjoining counties have some college credits but for various reasons “stopped out” of college before earning a degree.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) on Monday (August 15, 2011) will open a new service center that will make it easier for these adults to learn about and access opportunities at IUPUI to successfully complete a college degree.

The new Center for Adult and Lifelong Learning (CALL) will supply a concierge service for adult students coming back to school via the website . In addition, CALL staff will be readily available by phone – 317-274-CALL (317-274-2255) – to address questions or to schedule online and face-to-face advising.

The CALL website provides tools such as self-assessment tests that can help students determine academic majors or careers for which they are best suited. Resources available also include a comprehensive education terms glossary and a chat function staffed by personnel trained in serving adult learners. Students can also schedule meetings online and send email questions to CALL staff.

“In today’s job market, degrees are needed, said IUPUI Executive Vice Chancellor Uday Sukhatme. “The Center will serve as the doorway for adults returning to school to finish a degree or to attend classes. It will provide a vital link making IUPUI’s postsecondary educational opportunities more easily accessible for Indiana’s adult citizens.”

Associate Vice Chancellor Khaula Murtadha, head of the Continuing Learning Network, which sponsors CALL in partnership with schools and departments throughout the IUPUI campus, says, “CALL is a support structure that identifies individual needs and directs adult students to the appropriate academic program at IUPUI. By integrating current educational programming, online and face-to-face advising options, and support services tailored for the adult student, the Center intends to connect with community organizations, businesses, Ivy Tech and other higher education institutions to provide educational opportunities for adults at convenient times and locations.

“IUPUI stands firm in its commitment to increase post-secondary educational attainment in Indiana, for both traditional-aged and adult students, and the Center for Adult and Lifelong Learning is devoted to making the campus easily accessible for adult students.”
