The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has selected IUPUI Physical Education assistant professor Brian Culp to serve as a member of the committee that will revise the nation's Physical Education Standards.
Culp was chosen from a pool of 200-plus highly qualified applicants to serve as part of a 13-person committee appointed by the board's Certification Council.
For more than 20 years, the NBPTS has developed and revised standards for accomplished teaching in 16 different subject areas. National Board Certification is achieved upon successful completion of a portfolio and assessment designed to recognize accomplished teachers who meet these standards.
Culp indicates, “In this era of program evaluation, accreditation and opinions on how we can optimize student achievement, the committee will look to analyze and clearly explain what accomplished physical education teachers should know and be able to do for students in K-12 settings.
"The standards that the committee and I will revise have the potential for significant impact and innovation on current teaching and learning. Further, we hope to continue to espouse the importance of physical education as necessary for students’ physical, social and academic growth.”
