Dr. Tomas A. Lipinski has been selected as the new executive associate dean for the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science program in Indianapolis.

Dr. Lipinski holds a doctoral degree from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a J.D. from Marquette University Law School. He also earned the Master’s of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree from the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he currently serves as professor and director of the M.L.I.S. program.

Lipinski’s research focuses on intellectual property issues in a digital age, including issues of digital archiving, distance education, cultural rights and privacy. His forthcoming book from Neal-Schuman is entitled The Librarian’s Legal Companion for Buying and Licensing Information Resources.

“Dr. Lipinski will bring considerable scholarly heft and administrative acumen to the SLIS program at IUPUI,” noted Dean Blaise Cronin.

The new executive associate dean currently serves on the Copyright Subcommittee of the American Library Association’s Office of Information Technology Policy. He has also been an active member of the American Society for Information Science and Technology.

“Dr. Lipinski’s experiences and interest in intellectual property issues are an excellent fit not only for our SLIS program but for other areas of campus research as well,” says IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Lipinski held positions as librarian at the Milwaukee Public Library and the H. Douglas Barclay Law Library at Syracuse University.

Lipinski will begin his role as executive associate dean on January 1, 2011. Dr. Marilyn Irwin will continue in that position through December.

“Marilyn Irwin has done a wonderful job as executive associate dean, so we appreciate that she will continue in that capacity until Tomas Lipinski joins us in January,” Bantz says.
