Purdue School of Engineering and Technology has appointed Fred J. Rees as the new chair of the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI.
Rees is professor of music and head of graduate studies in the Department of Music and Arts Technology. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor’s of Music and a performance certificate in double bass from the Crane School of Music (SUNY-Potsdam).
His career interests have included distance learning, string education, double bass and piano performance, and music technology. Currently, he is overseeing the administration of the Department’s Master of Science in Music Technology program which is in its eighth year of being offered entirely over the Internet.
Rees came to Indianapolis in 1999 from the University of Northern Iowa, where he developed the first graduate music education degree program in the country to be broadcast at a distance using the state’s interactive television network. His prior academic appointments include New York University and the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia).
Rees, who became chair on Jan. 5, 2009, follows Dr. G. David Peters who has provided outstanding leadership of the music programs over the years as the director of the School of Music at IUPUI. Peters had served as chair of the Department of Music and Arts Technology since July 2008. Under his leadership, the IU School of Music program at IUPUI became part of the Purdue School of Engineering & Technology in May 2008.
