Chancellor Charles R. BantzJanuary 30, 2012 — Now that Executive Vice Chancellor Uday Sukhatme has announced his plans to join Pace University as provost, effective May 21, we have moved to form a search committee for his successor. Chancellor Charles R. BantzJanuary 23, 2012 — On Sunday,  Jan. 15, CBS’s 60 Minutes aired a wonderful segment on Jake Barnett, a 13-year old once diagnosed with autism who turned out to have a special talent for math, physics, and astronomy at a very young age. He enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in the School of Science at IUPUI last year. It is a thoughtful and touching story, but it is also terrific exposure for the campus, as Jake sports his IUPUI sweat shirt and hat, and is videotaped in various campus settings. Morley Safer interviews Jake, his family, his faculty mentors, and fellow students. Not only did it run on 60 Minutes, but it was plugged repeatedly during the NFL playoff game that preceded it.

January 17, 2012 — As we begin a new year, I am reminded about how fortunate we are at IUPUI to have a community that makes a positive difference in the lives of others. Our campus includes more than 30,000 students, 8,000 faculty and staff, and countless visitors, patients, clients, and partners. IUPUI does make an impact every day on the lives of thousands of people. And we have an obligation to assure that the impact is positive.

Chancellor Charles R. BantzDecember 19, 2011 — Holiday giving is much on our minds now, as we seek ways to let family, friends, and colleagues know how much they mean to us during this special season. Giving to our community is also a habit of the season that extends throughout the year, for which I’d like to thank the hundreds of students, staff, and faculty who have opened their hearts to others in various campuswide campaigns.

Chancellor Charles R. BantzDecember 5, 2011 — On Thursday, Dec. 1, the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law was born. “Overwhelmed” was Bob McKinney’s reaction when he saw the atrium at Inlow Hall filled to capacity—students, faculty, and staff at least four-deep on the balconies at every level of the building looking on—as he accepted the thanks, applause, and multiple standing ovations that came his way after the announcement of his $24 million gift to the school. With matching funds from the university, the value of his contribution to the school tops $31 million, which will mean five endowed professorships, an endowment fund for student scholarships, and a vision for achieving the status of a top 30 law school in national rankings.

Chancellor Charles R. BantzNovember 21, 2011 — Student learning support services are widely available on campus to increase student success. We know that students using these resources are more likely to persist to graduation, which has, in turn, helped the campus improve its retention rate. As we head into the Thanksgiving break—and return next week for the final push to the end of the semester—it is a good time to remind your students of the academic support provided by, or coordinated by, the Bepko Learning Center.

Chancellor Charles R. BantzNovember 14, 2011 — John Krauss’s recent appointment by Governor Mitch Daniels to serve on the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board is an excellent example of the service many faculty provide to state agencies by lending their expertise as researchers and consultants. As a lawyer and expert in alternative dispute resolution, John has been a member of the board’s Ad-hoc Panel of Mediators and Fact Finders since 1991 and is also director of the Indiana Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations.
