BantzJanuary 23, 2012 — On Sunday,  Jan. 15, CBS’s 60 Minutes aired a wonderful segment on Jake Barnett, a 13-year old once diagnosed with autism who turned out to have a special talent for math, physics, and astronomy at a very young age. He enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in the School of Science at IUPUI last year. It is a thoughtful and touching story, but it is also terrific exposure for the campus, as Jake sports his IUPUI sweat shirt and hat, and is videotaped in various campus settings. Morley Safer interviews Jake, his family, his faculty mentors, and fellow students. Not only did it run on 60 Minutes, but it was plugged repeatedly during the NFL playoff game that preceded it.

Barnett enrolled as an Honors Scholar at IUPUI in fall 2011 after auditing courses and earning college credit at IUPUI as a Special Programs for Academic Nurturing (SPAN) student.

January 11, 2012 — The Purdue School of Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis has launched the Institute for Mathematical Modeling and Computational Science, an interdisciplinary endeavor dedicated to solving perplexing problems in such diverse fields as medicine, the environment, and computer science. iM2CS’s parallel mission is to train a new generation to identify and solve the scientific issues with which they will be faced.

November 15, 2011 — — On Nov. 18-19, three suburban Indianapolis high school students will present physics research they conducted over the summer in the School of Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis as they compete against teams from 12 other states in regional finals of the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology.

Lugar Center Director receives 35th Patent for Department of Defense work

. Peter SchubertNovember 8, 2011 — Dr. Peter Schubert—recently appointed director to the Lugar Center for Renewable Energy—has hit the ground running at IUPU. On Nov 1, the USPTO granted Patent 8,046,946— Dr. Schubert’s 35th Patent and his first in the field of firearms. The patent was granted on November 1st; just two weeks after Dr. Schubert began at his new appointment at IUPUI. Dr. Schubert’s newest patent gains exposure for both the School and IUPUI on a global level.

IUPUI Open Houses Give High School Students Scoop on Launching Science Careers
