Ever had an idea that you were sure would make a great new invention or create a significant innovation, but weren’t sure how to develop, test, and bring it to market?
There are college-aged inventors all over the world now who are not only creating leading edge software, robots, and other devices but also solving clinical problems in developing countries by inventing sustainable healthcare technologies. There is Keen Mobility, cofounded by college roommates, which earns millions of dollars in revenue every year with an expanding range of durable medical goods that improve the health and comfort of people with disabilities.
Now, thanks to Innovation-to-Enterprise Central (ITEC), a collaboration between IUPUI’s Center for Research and Learning and the Solution Center, our undergraduate students will have the opportunity to actively learn about research commercialization in a special 20-24 week academic program being launched this fall after a highly successful pilot last spring.
The Innovation-to-Enterprise Central experience will promote students’ interest in invention and business development. With faculty and community members serving as mentors, students in the ITEC program will work in multidisciplinary teams to research, plan, and develop a new process, application, or prototype. While still in college, our students will be able to build a significant professional network that will help them turn ideas into innovations. Our goal is to prepare the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, led by students and graduates who will ultimately contribute to economic growth and social advancement at home and around the world.
Interested faculty and students are invited to learn more about the program and make an application at the Innovation-to-Enterprise Central web site: http://crl.iupui.edu/ITEC.asp.
My thanks to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Center for Research and Learning, and the Solution Center, for their leadership in partnering with IUPUI academic and research units on this initiative.
