New ways of seeing are new ways of knowing. The Multicultural Success Center, which has its grand opening this week in Taylor Hall, is a place that will engage students from all backgrounds. It will have a strong academic focus. Its purpose is learning. Its goal is helping students be successful in college. The creation of suitable study and common space, as represented by the Multicultural Success Center, is intentionally designed to help us retain and graduate all our students, but especially those whose contributions are needed if we are to obtain the full benefits of diversity.
It is based on strong evidence that a diverse educational environment has distinct educational as well as social advantages. Everyone, regardless of racial or ethnic background, learns more and better when a variety of viewpoints and experiences shape discussions because each person lends new perspectives to the learning process. Students must be prepared for a diverse world, so multicultural understanding is paramount if we are to consider ourselves successful as an institution of higher learning.
Establishing the Multicultural Success Center is part of the “extraordinary student success” that will be a theme of the IUPUI Impact Campaign as we ask for our community’s philanthropic support of our activities during the course of the campaign.
