A reception celebrating the founding of the IUPUI Honors College will be held August 27 in Scholars Hall at University Place Conference Center.

For the record books, August 27 will be the official opening day of the college.

The reception begins at 4 p.m. It will feature remarks from IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz¸ Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty Uday Sukhatme, Honors College Founding Dean Jane Luzar, and Undergraduate Student Government President Brady Harman. Light refreshments will be served at the reception which is open to students, faculty, staff and the community. To register to attend, visit: http://forty.iupui.edu/honors.

“Although it is IUPUI’s newest college, it will provide the signature undergraduate academic experience at IUPUI,” Luzar said.

According to Luzar, students in the Honors College, who will be known as Honors Scholars, will receive:

• Focused, supportive resources for their undergraduate experience
• Small, challenging classes
• Meaningful research experiences
• Bridge programs to graduate and professional schools
• Assistance competing for prestigious scholarships for after they graduate such as Truman, Goldwater, and Fulbright awards

Faculty who worked on plans to transition from a campus honors program that was established in 1981 to an honors college view it as a “beacon of excellence for the IUPUI campus that will serve as a powerful recruiting tool that will help to enhance the visibility of the campus as a destination for a diverse array of talented undergraduates from Indiana and beyond.”

The vision they developed pictures an Honors College that will enable students to experience some of the benefits of a private liberal arts college through small classes, personalized advising, and rich opportunities for interaction with senior faculty. At the same time, Honors College scholars will benefit from close articulation with IUPUI’s outstanding graduate and professional school programs and with the diverse range of other programs that the IUPUI campus offers.

The IUPUI Honors College will help the campus to solidify its reputation as a place where serious students are engaged in serious learning – through research, civic engagement, and international study, as well as through close interactions with inspiring faculty.

IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban research university. The campus enrolls more than 30,000 students in 21 schools and academic units.
