IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban research university. The campus enrolls more than 30,000 students in 21 schools and academic units.
Motorists and pedestrians can expect traffic blockages near downtown Indianapolis medical facilities and the IUPUI campus on Saturday, June 27, 2009, as the annual N.I.T. E. (Navigate Indy This Evening) Ride takes place. The bicycling event begins at 11 p.m. June 27 at the Major Taylor Velodrome.
The downtown area blockages will begin at about 11:15 p.m. as riders cross 10th Street from Indiana Avenue and proceed south on University Boulevard.
The N.I.T.E. Ride will cause traffic blockages lasting at least 45 minutes at each point along a 20-mile route. These blockages may impact employees of the many downtown medical facilities (including but not limited to the IUPUI, IU, Riley, Wishard, VA, and Methodist campuses), as well as students living on the IUPUI campus.
The Ride will impact a “contained” area bounded by 10th Street, University Boulevard, Michigan Street and Porto Alegre from 11:15 p.m. to midnight. The event will have a continuing impact in the downtown area until about 12:30 a.m.
Medical personnel who require access to or from the "contained area" will be able to use the two westbound lanes of 10th Street. Those departing from the area will use the right-hand westbound lane across the 10th Street White River Bridge.
Personnel requiring access to the contained area should approach from the west, proceeding eastbound on 10th Street.
Individuals who require access to or from the area inside the cycling route, such as the Methodist Hospital or IUPUI campus housing, may do so via I-65 using the exits and entrances at 21st Street or West Street.
Motorists driving in the affected areas are reminded to heed the instructions of IMPD officers directing traffic.
