Brown to Receive Educator Award from National Press Photographers Association

James W. Brown, executive associate dean of the Indiana University School of Journalism at IUPUI will receive the Robin F. Garland Educator Award from the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) at its national convention June 13, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nev. The award is given for outstanding service as a photojournalism educator.

Brown graduated in 1967 from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill. with a B.S. in Cinema and Photography. While an undergraduate, he was awarded one of the first student internships at National Geographic magazine. He earned the MBA and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.

Brown began teaching photojournalism in 1973 at the University of Minnesota where he was head of the nationally recognized photojournalism sequence. He joined the faculty of Indiana University School of Journalism as the founding associate dean for the school’s program at IUPUI. Brown has taught visual journalism classes throughout his career and continues today to teach the core curriculum courses in photography.

Brown has a long history of service to journalism organizations including the NPPA. In April 2009 he was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame and in May 2009 was named a “Distinguished Hoosier” by Governor Mitch Daniels. In 2007 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Hoosier State Press Association, an award that historically has been given to a practicing journalist. Brown received a 2004 Silver Beaver Award, Crossroads of America Council, Boy Scouts of America, for his service to youth.

Among his photographic awards, Brown has won Gold and Bronze awards for media productions from the International Film and Television Festival of New York.

His most recent publication of photographs illustrates Long Journey Home: Oral Histories of Contemporary Delaware Indians, co-edited with . The book was Best Non-Fiction Book - 2008 Indiana Society of Professional Journalists Awards and is published by Indiana University Press. The book represents more than 10 years of work by Brown.

Bob Garland, after whom the award was named, was a picture editor and war correspondent for the Saturday Evening Post until he joined Graflex Inc. as press technical representative after World War II. Later he became a press photography products specialist for Eastman Kodak Co. He died in December 1972.
