March 13, 2009
The 2nd Annual Cesar Chavez Dinner at IUPUI will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2009, at the IUPUI Campus Center, Room 450. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Educator and Retired Army Lt. Col. Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch, who broke barriers and set records during her military career, will be the featured speaker. The title of Kickbusch’s talk is “Living Your Legacy.”
Born and raised in a barrio in Laredo, Texas, Kickbusch overcame poverty, discrimination and illiteracy. After earning a degree from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, she entered the U.S. Army as an officer and served 20 years, becoming the highest ranking Hispanic woman in the Combat Support Field.
Kickbusch chose to retire from the Army in 1996 and found Educational Achievement Services, an organization that enables her to share leadership experiences, success techniques and motivational messages with youth, their parents and their teachers.
“Leadership is not about you. It is about the legacy we leave behind,” Kickbusch says in her online bio on the Educational Achievement Services Web site. “We must plant the seed of tomorrow's leadership in our children today. We need to feed our youth positive nourishment such as mentoring, quality education, self-esteem, discipline and values. Only then, will we be able to harvest a great next generation.”
The dinner will honor Latino students, staff, faculty and community leaders for their service.
