Educator, writer, and scientist John Seely Brown is the keynote speaker at the 2009 Edward C. Moore Symposium on Teaching Excellence scheduled for April 2, 2009 on the IUPUI campus.
The theme for this year’s symposium, “What Does IT Mean for Teaching and Learning,?” explores how rapidly developing technological innovations impact teaching and learning in higher education. Brown’s presentation is the center of this year’s symposium, which will feature workshops and presentations from IUPUI faculty sharing their insights and ideas on innovative and successful uses of technology in the classroom.
Brown, a visiting scholar at the University of Southern California, serves as an independent co-chairman for the Deloitte Center for Edge Innovation; he is also a member of the National Academy of Education and a Trustee of Brown University and the MacArthur Foundation. His dedication to integrating technology into education has been recognized and honored by various universities and foundations, and he has authored more than 100 papers and five books.
By focusing on how open source technologies allow students to create unique learning communities, Brown’s presentation, “Learning in the Digital Age,” examines the constantly evolving world in which 21st century college students receive and shape their own educations. Brown will discuss the definition of literacy in this new era; he will also discuss teaching and learning in relation to the necessity of students and their instructors to navigate environments with increasing technological components.
The E.C. Moore Symposium is co-sponsored by the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning, IU School of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development, IU Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching and University Information Technology Services.
