A faculty member of the London Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts next month will present lectures and performances during a week-long residency at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
Tim Hardy, actor, director and Royal Academy faculty member, will be in residence at IUPUI from March 22-29, 2009. During his time at IUPUI, he will give several lectures and dramatic performances that focus on Galileo and the interplay between science and religion. Performance tickets are on sale now.
Hardy will present the John D. Barlow Lecture in the Humanities at 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 23, 2009, in the IUPUI University Library Ruth Lilly Auditorium. His talk is entitled “Reinventing Shakespeare for the 21st Century: Keeping the Bard Relevant on Stage, on Page, and in Film.” Admission to this lecture is free of charge. At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24 and at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, Hardy will perform the one-man play, “Galileo,” in Room 152 of the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex (ICTC), 535 W. The play, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s discoveries, explores the tensions between science and religion and one man’s struggle for intellectual and spiritual salvation.
Hardy will also appear at the IU School of Law – Indianapolis at 6 p.m., on Wednesday, March 25 in the Wynne Courtroom for a performance of “Galileo” and to participate in a panel discussion on canonical law and the issues of science vs. religious belief. In addition to work with Royal Academy and the Royal Shakespeare Company, Hardy has performed in and directed productions across the United Kingdom, in Austria, the United States and Germany.
The Department of English in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, with support from the Purdue University School of Science and the IU School of Law – Indianapolis, is presenting Hardy’s educational and performance residence at IUPUI. A grant from the IUPUI 40th Anniversary Celebration Fund awarded to English Professor Terri Bourus also will help underwrite the week-long visit.
