IU School of Nursing Dean Appointed to National Defense Health Board Subcommittee

Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean and distinguished professor, Indiana University School of Nursing (IUSON), has been appointed to the US Department of Defense Health Board (DHB) Health Care Delivery Subcommittee. Dean Broome is one of 18 members of the DHB Subcommittee with a two-year appointment.

The Defense Health Board is a Federal Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Defense providing independent scientific advice/recommendations on matters relating to operational programs, health policy development, health research programs, and requirements for the treatment and prevention of disease and injury, promotion of health and the delivery of health care to Department of Defense beneficiaries. The mission of the Defense Health Board’s Health Care Delivery Subcommittee focuses on ensuring optimal health care and health care delivery across the military health system (MHS).

In addition to her leadership role as dean at IUSON, Dr. Broome is also a member of the Indiana University Graduate School, Affiliate Faculty of the Indiana University School of Bioethics, and also serves as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at Clarian Health. Previously, Broome has held a variety of academic appointments at the University of Alabama – Birmingham, the University of Louisville, the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, the Medical College of Wisconsin, Rush University, and the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Broome retired from the Army Nurse Corps Reserves, in which she served for 22 years, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2000.

Dr. Broome’s military awards and honors include the Meritorious Service Medal (2001), the Army Commendation Medal (1976, 1991, 2000), and the Army Achievement Medal (1995). She has authored nearly 90 refereed journal articles, 5 books/monographs, 14 book chapters, and numerous editorials and non-refereed columns and abstracts, and has delivered numerous national and international presentations. Dr. Broome is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (and current Editor-in-Chief of Nursing Outlook), a member of the American Nurses Association, the Council of Science Editors, member and past President of the Society for Pediatric Nurses, and member of the Board of Directors of the Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation.
